2022 Charteris Hawkesbury Vineyard Pinot Noir

2022 Charteris Hawkesbury Vineyard Pinot Noir

All red cherry and wild herbs on the wind.  Mid Ruby Garnet with a brick red hue.

Layers of Maraschino cherry, Raspberry leaf and Cranberry with a mix of fresh cut leafy and wild woody herbs, a hint of Rosewood and briar adding to the cinnamon and nutmeg. Faint notes of rose petal and licorice root complete the perfumed and complex bouquet.

Silky smooth entry with red cherry, wild thyme and star anise, expansive and volumous with layers of red plum and wild strawberry over fine grained almost silty tannin texture. Long and pithy with persistent tannin/acid tension giving a fresh and energetic length of flavour. Hints of wild herbs and graphite melt away into a juicy finish. Very long and persistent.

The oak and whole bunch texture play support to the fruit tannin ensuring a long future of fruit and background complexity. There is a youthful freshness to this wine which will see 7 to 10 years in the cellar no problem.

Vineyard Notes
With lockdowns fading into history, we were back on the plane to Central Otago on a more regular basis from March 22 onward, just in time for harvest. The growing season was generally kind with mild temperatures and rainfall spread throughout the calendar. There were a couple of cold nights in November with light frost but nothing to get too nervous about. December and January were warm with flowering and fruit set obliging to bring us back to better potential yields than 2020 and 2021. February cooled off a little before March delivered stellar growing conditions setting up a very good harvest, with ample yields and excellent natural grape chemistry. A couple of rain days through April took the dry March stress off the vineyards and ensured a well-spaced harvest with a great spread of ripening dates across the Central Otago sub regions. The Hawkesbury Vineyard sits in its own little micro-climate and this vintage it really delivered with minimal frost stress and the right amount of rain at the right times. The first few blocks were picked in the second week of April with Easter giving us some breathing space before we really cracked into it straight after. In all a very seamless and potentially classic harvest.
Winemaker Notes
A classic in the making, The Hawkesbury Vineyard has delivered in spades for 2022 with a fine display of the distinction and elegance this small patch of dirt can reveal. The uniqueness of this vineyard sits comfortably with its Monopole like status, sitting as it does away from any other vineyards and with a soil and climate profile like no other. The kind 2022 growing season and resulting ripeness with good yields have the character of this vineyard in full display. 30% Whole Bunch, 20% new oak and a blend of Abel Clone, 667 and 777 ensure a fruit focused expression in this wine.
