A Different Drop

PJ Charteris is an experienced winemaker and one of the country’s top Wine Show Judges, currently sitting as the Chairman of Judges for the Royal Sydney Wine Show. A Kiwi native, PJ has spent much of his professional career working in the Australian wine industry. He spent time at Penfolds and Lindemans before being appointed Chief Winemaker at Hunter Valley icon Brokenwood, where stayed for twelve years.

Charteris is PJ returning to his NZ roots. It’s his chance to put forth his own spin on the Central Otago Wine Region. With his local connections, PJ has secured a suite of excellent vineyard to source his fruit from. Since the brand’s conception in 2008, his wines have received high critical acclaim from wine critics and consumers alike. Charteris producers a single vineyard site Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir from the sub regional of Bannockburn and a Central Otago Blend Pinot Noir.

Wakawaka Wine Reviews – Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration
Hard to find a more celebrated and accomplished collection of world winemakers. Mt Difficulty’s Matt Dicey, Charteris Wine’s PJ Charteris, Comte George de Vogues’s Franceois Millet, Littoral’s Ted Lemon giving the events opening Discovery Tasting Discussion.  PJ’s quote “I don’t think you can get a sense of the site’s complexity, and nuance of the favour and structure of the site without (experience of the site) understanding and thought. Without understanding and thought it is just luck. The build up of knowledge and experience become very important for consistency across vintages”.

Gourmet Traveller by Nick Stock
The 2013 Charteris Winter Vineyard Pinot Noir is a wine that offered both depth and a handsome sense of completeness, a bright core of ripe cherry and plum fruits, plenty of spicy potential and refined, nicely groomed tannins complemented by vibrant acid

Wine Companion by James Halliday
Owners Peter James (PJ) Charteris and partner Christina Pattison met at Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley in 1999. PJ was the chief executive winemaker at Brokenwood, and Christina was the marketing manager. Together they have over four decades of winemaking and wine marketing experience. In 2008 they launched their boutique brand For NZ-born PJ, finding a top Pinot Noir site in Central Otago New Zealand was a spiritual homecoming. They also have a vineyard with the gold-plated address of Felton Road, Bannockburn, planted to clones 115 777 and Abel. Currently the mouse (small production) that roared but who knows what the future holds!
