Renowned winemaker PJ Charteris has over 25 years winemaking experience, and is a senior wine show judge, working across both regional and capital wine shows for last two decades within New Zealand and Australia. PJ’s has held the position of Chairman of Judges for the National Wine Shows of Australia for the past 10 years, and currently sits as Chairman of Judges for the Sydney Royal Wine Show.
PJ’s own wine label is built into his DNA and birthplace of New Zealand. PJ splits his time between the Hunter Valley Wine Consulting in Australia and crafting is own boutique label in Central Otago called Charteris, where he specialises in sourcing tiny volumes of high quality fruit from specific vineyards in Bannockburn and Wanaka in Central Otago, New Zealand.
With 30 years involvement within the wine industry, one would think most questions would have been answered, most importantly there is always the quest for the special piece of dirt that yields something unique that speaks of place. This search has led PJ across many of New Zealand and Australia’s finest grape growing regions and around the planet. From California and Oregon, to the Rhone Valley of France, from Burgundy to Barolo and lots in between. So it was Central Otago that became PJ’s ‘holy grail’ wine region, with it’s rugged and beautiful landscape the wines are exciting, vibrant and diverse.
We craft our wines with minimal intervention and work endlessly at capturing the purity and beauty of of this magnificent region.
