2012 Charteris Winter Vineyard Pinot Noir

Reviewed by Gary Walsh, Wine Front New Zealand

The Winter Vineyard is located on Felton Road Bannockburn, a nice dress circle location right down by the Kawarau River. Winemaker PJ Charteris has unruly hair, but his wines are beautifully turned out.

Red fruit, lots of spice, dried thyme and floral perfume and a little choc-toffee top note.  Medium bodied, lithe and light on its feet, almost pretty with cherry and a delicious spicy mouth perfume. Acidity is spot on – shaping – but not intrusive – and fine grained tannin is tucked neatly into the wine, running firm and gently stalky on the finish. Stylish wine. Beautifully made too. Give it another year or so in bottle to get the best out of it.
